Plancius

Around Spitsbergen Cruise - In the realm of Polar Bear and Ice

First built in 1976 as an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy and named "Hr. Ms. Tydeman", the Plancius has now been fully reconstructed as a 110-passenger vessel suitable for Polar expeditions. The vessel offers a restaurant/lecture room and a spacious observation lounge (with bar) with large windows, offering a full panorama view. All cabins are generously proportioned and are outside facing, mostly equipped with two bunk beds and a comfortable private bathroom.

Info

One of the most recently refitted river cruise ships, the Plancius has all the conveniences of modern design and technology with a legacy dating back to 1976, when she was built for the Royal Dutch Navy. Itineraries aboard the Plancius focus upon exploration and adventure, with as much time scheduled for shore excursions as possible. Because of the ship’s working history, she is not luxurious, though guests will find that they are very comfortable and well looked after during their journey, feeling privileged to travel on such a special and historically important ship. The dress code aboard the ship reflects the spirit of adventure, so comfortable, sensible clothing and footwear is recommended.

Equipped to carry 114 passengers, the Plancius has 53 cabins with private toilets and showers. Open deck space allows full walk-around, and large exterior windows give way to awe-inspiring panoramic views. Passengers have access to the ship’s navigation bridge. Public spaces include a spacious observation lounge with bar, a library and a dining room, which doubles as a lecture room where well informed, highly trained crew members offer informative presentations on wildlife, geology, Antarctic base camps and local history.
