Uruguay is located on the Atlantic seaboard of South America, wedged between Argentina to the west and Brazil to the north and east. It is the smallest of the Spanish-speaking nations of Latin America. The Atlantic Ocean and the estuary of the River Plate (Rio de la Plata) form Uruguay's coastline. The Rio Negro, Uruguay's largest river, crosses the whole country flowing east to west into the River Plate. The Rio Uruguay forms part of the border with Argentina and the coastal lagoon, Laguna Merin, is shared with Brazil.

Montevideo, The capital, is a natural harbour at the mouth of the River Plate and was developed by Spanish colonists in the 18th century. It is home to more than half of the country's population and is now a thriving modern city with a long sandy beach and a historical old town. Old colonial towns, such as Colonia del Sacramento with its cobbled streets, colourful houses and a yacht marina, and the conversion of farms into gaucho or cowboy-style theme parks, or estancias, have helped Uruguay to develop a modest tourism industry following the decline of revenues from agricultural exports.

Punta del Este and Piriapolis are the main beach resorts of Uruguay. Although wine-making is a relatively new industry for Uruguay, there are numerous wineries within easy reach of Montevideo.  Bodega Bouza, set beside the Santa Lucia river, and the Juanicó winery located 17 miles north of Montevideo, welcome visitors.
