Barbados Tourist Guide

Barbados

Barbados is a charming sophisticated tropical island with powder-soft sand surrounded by turquoise seas, making it one of the most popular beach resort vacation destinations in the Caribbean. Until 1966 it was a British colony and became prosperous through sugar production and tourism. Inland from the coastal resorts, the island?s colonial heritage is reflected in its architecture, with preserved grand houses in European style.

Bridgetown is a small but modern bustling capital city. Broad Street runs through the middle of the city and is the main shopping area with the ornate Parliament Building at its eastern end. Barbados is the only place in the Caribbean to have been visited by George Washington and the house where he stayed is now a museum. National Heroes Square contains a statue of Lord Nelson that pre-dates the more famous one in London's Trafalgar Square.

The Deep Water Harbour in Bridgetown is the main port in Barbados and the main transport hub of the Eastern Caribbean. It has a state-of-the-art cruise liner terminal. You can see a lot of private yachts and even sail on a replica pirate ship. Nearby, the Boatyard is a beach club by day that turns into a lively and popular dance club at night. Pelican Village is a plaza of arts and crafts boutiques and workshops where you buy local works of pottery and sculpture.  On the southern coast, St Lawrence Gap is mile of restaurants, bars, clubs and shops along a stretch of white sandy beach.

Below ground Barbados has fascinating natural cave systems cut in the limestone bedrock by underground rivers - the most famous being Harrison's Cave which has a 40 foot underground waterfall.
